inline xalloc_flex() into FLEXPTR_ALLOC_MEM

Allocate and copy directly in FLEXPTR_ALLOC_MEM and remove the now
unused helper function xalloc_flex().  The resulting code is shorter
and the offset arithmetic is a bit simpler.
